Edward Johnston is my 9th great-grandfather, and my shared ancestor with President Andrew Johnson. He was born April 21, 1638 in Abderdeenshire, Scotland.

Edward arrived in Virginia in 1665 (age 27), as confirmed by Frederick Lewis Weis in “The Colonial Clergy of Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina.” (Boston: Society of the Descendants of the Colonial Clergy, 1955. Reprinted by Genealogical Publishing Co, Baltimore, 1976.)

When he was 39 (1677 in Virginia), Edward married Elizabeth Sarah Walker (b. 1657 – d. 1725). There is some confusion over this, because their marriage is listed as January 12, 1687 in Woburn, Middlesex, Massachusetts by the Massachusetts Compiled Marriages Index.

Edward died May 4, 1704 in New Kent County, Virginia.
