Sarah Leota Johnson, my 2nd great-grandmother, was born November 18, 1901 in Alton, Upshur County, West Virginia.

In 1909, her younger sister Mary V Johnson was born.

The 1910 Census shows Sarah, age 6, with dad William J Johnson & mom Mary I Johnson:

Sarah’s first marriage was to J T Harris in 1916. The 1920 Census lists Sarah, at age 19, as a widow.

The same year, Sarah gave birth to son Charles Harry Cook. Then in 1922, she had my grandmother, Lillie Francis Cook; in 1926, son Gilford Arthur Cook; in 1928, daughter Freda May Cook; and in 1930, daughter Lilith Cook.

On the 1930 Census, Sarah is married and a homemaker:

Sarah’s dad, William J Johnson (b. 1866), died in 1932. Then in 1935, she welcomed daughter Marlene Joy Cook.

The 1940 Census lists Sarah’s highest level of education as “Elementary School, 4th Grade”:

Sarah’s brother, Felix W Johnson (b. 1895), passed away on May 4, 1952. Then her son, Gilford Arthur Cook, died on February 27, 1957. On June 17, 1960, Sarah’s daughter Freda May Cook died.

Sarah died July 26, 1964 in Braxton County, West Virginia. She is buried at Union Cemetery, Kedron, Upshur Co, West Virginia.
